Herbert Road

Post  bobsy on Sun Dec 18, 2016 3:05 am

Bobsy here - I lived in Herbert Road from roughly 1953 to 1963. Across the road was an alley which gave access to the Romford Road shops. at the bottom of the alley was a toffee factory. on the corner of the alley was where the Polly family lived. The son was one of my friends. His name was Earnest but everyone called him boy. I remember Dukes chippy and often had my lunch there, also Mansells greencrocer and a sweet shop. On the corner of Herbert Rd and Romford Rd there was a sort of ice cream parlour where they sold Dickey Bird Glo Joy ice lollies. I also remember Levy's. He sold loose coal by the pound from the yard at the back of the shop. You took your sack on a trolley or old pram and he shoveled the coal in. My sister and I were christened at the old Methodist church on the corner of Herbert Road. Sad to learn that it burnt down, even sadder if it was due to arson! Will try to dig up some more memories from the dark recesses of my brain for a future post.
